India is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world! It is home to over 1.4 billion people, speaking more than 1,600 languages and dialects across 28 states and 8 Union Territories. It has every major religion, countless traditional festivals, and landscapes ranging from snow-capped Himalayas to tropical beaches, vast deserts, and dense rainforests, making it a melting pot of cultures, cuisines, and traditions.

Travel Tips details

The best time to visit India is between October and March, during the cooler and dry winter months, making it ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities. The summer months (April to June) can be extremely hot, especially in the northern and central regions, while the monsoon season (June to September) brings heavy rains to much of the country, particularly the west and south, though it offers lush landscapes and fewer tourists.

The local currency is the Indian Rupee (INR). Credit cards are widely accepted in cities, hotels, and upscale restaurants, but it's advisable to carry cash for smaller purchases, local markets, and rural areas. ATMs are easily found in cities and towns but be aware of foreign transaction fees. Always carry some cash for local transactions, especially in more remote areas.

India has many languages, with Hindi being the most widely spoken, followed by English, which is commonly used in urban areas, business, and tourism. Regional languages such as Tamil, Bengali, and Telugu are spoken in different states. Learning a few basic phrases in Hindi, like "Dhanyavaad" (Thank you) and "Namaste" (Hello), can help in connecting with locals.

India offers various transportation options, from trains and buses to taxis and auto-rickshaws. For long distances, the Indian Railway system is extensive and economical, while domestic flights are common for faster travel. In cities, ride-hailing apps like Ola and Uber are available. Be prepared for traffic congestion in major cities and always check for local transport options and routes.

Tap water is not safe to drink in most parts of India. Stick to bottled or filtered water, which is widely available in stores and restaurants. Avoid ice in drinks unless you’re sure it’s made from purified water.

SIM Cards – Consider purchasing an E-SIM or a local SIM card from providers like Airtel, Jio, or Vodafone for affordable data and calls. Coverage is generally good in cities, but rural areas may have limited access. Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, cafes, and public areas, though it can be slower in remote locations.

In case of an emergency, dial 112 for police, medical emergencies, or fire services.

Tipping is common in India but not mandatory. In restaurants, a 10% tip is appreciated if the service charge is not included. Small tips for hotel staff, drivers, and guides are customary for good service, but not expected.

India is home to a variety of ecosystems, from the Himalayas to the coastal beaches. Support eco-friendly accommodations and sustainable tours, particularly in places like Kerala's backwaters, Goa's beaches, and the Sundarbans. Reduce plastic use, avoid disturbing wildlife, and support local communities through responsible tourism.

India is generally safe for travellers, though some precautions are necessary. Be cautious of petty theft, especially in crowded tourist spots. Avoid traveling at night in poorly lit areas and stay aware of your belongings. Respect local customs and be mindful of scams in tourist areas. It's also important to stay informed about local weather conditions, particularly during the monsoon season. Always check your national security advisory prior to your trip.

Food – Don’t miss iconic dishes like Masala Dosa, Butter Chicken, Chole Bhature, and Rogan Josh. Street food is an essential experience, with Pani Puri, Samosas, and Chaat widely available. Festivals – Experience India's vibrant festivals, such as Diwali, Holi, Durga Puja, and Onam. Each festival is marked by elaborate celebrations, traditional performances, and festive feasts. Etiquette – Dress modestly when visiting religious sites like temples, mosques, and gurdwaras. Remove shoes before entering sacred spaces. Always respect local customs, especially in rural areas, and be conscious of cultural sensitivities.
